CD1 opens with two iconic collaborations: Queen & David Bowie’s ‘Under Pressure’, which topped the UK Chart in 1981, and Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson’s ‘Say Say Say’, which reached #2 (and #1 in the US). Blondie’s ground-breaking ‘Rapture’ and Eurythmics’ ‘Here Comes The Rain Again’ continue the run of instantly recognisable pop classics, followed by The Police’s #1 ‘Walking On The Moon’ and Electric Light Orchestra’s ‘Livin’ Thing’. Anthemic smashes from Dolly Parton with ‘9 To 5’, Gloria Gaynor’s timeless #1 ‘I Will Survive’ and Donna Summer’s ‘Hot Stuff’ bring together a trio of huge singalong favourites. Irene Cara’s ‘Fame’, which topped the UK chart for three weeks leads into a stellar run of timeless disco including Chic’s ‘Le Freak’ , Sister Sledge’s ‘We Are Family’ plus Diana Ross with ‘I’m Coming Out’ and Chaka Khan’s ‘I’m Every Woman’ sit alongside Earth, Wind & Fire’s Top 3 hit ‘September’ before Barry White’s ‘You See The Trouble With Me’. CD4 brings together a powerful run of pop and soul, opening with Spandau Ballet’s ageless ‘Gold’, The Human League’s #1 ‘Don’t You Want Me’, and Ultravox’s ‘Dancing With Tears In My Eyes’. ‘The Power Of Love’ from Frankie Goes To Hollywood adds another #1 before Tears For Fears’ ‘Head Over Heels’ and Soft Cell’s ‘Say Hello, Wave Goodbye’ complete this run of superb 80s sounds. Next up, from the early 90s, Boy George’s brilliant cover of ‘The Crying Game’ and Sparks with their anthem ‘When Do I Get To Sing “My Way”’. A trio of US chart-toppers follow from Daryl Hall & John Oates with ‘I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)’, Billy Ocean’s ‘Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)’ and Bananarama with ‘Venus’. Back to the 60s next for soul gems from The Supremes with ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’, Stevie Wonder’s ‘For Once In My Life’, Otis Redding’s ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ and Ben E. King with ‘Stand By Me’ followed by Percy Sledge’s ‘When A Man Loves A Woman’ and Dusty Springfield with ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’…Jimmy Somerville kicks off a trio of huge love songs to finish the disc with ‘To Love Somebody’, joined by UB40’s ‘Don’t Break My Heart’ and Madness’ ‘It Must Be Love’ to close.

 

CD5 rounds off the collection with more massive hits, beginning with Elton John’s ‘I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues’, Neil Diamond’s ‘Forever In Blue Jeans’ and 10cc’s ‘I’m Not In Love’. Sinéad O’Connor’s stunning version of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ spent four weeks at the top of the chart and features alongside timeless tracks from The Pretenders with ‘I’ll Stand By You’ and Cher’s ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’. Sting’s ‘If You Love Somebody Set Them Free’ leads to more contemporary pop from Ed Sheeran and ‘Shape Of You’, which spent a whopping 14 weeks at #1 in the UK, as well as Coldplay’s ‘A Sky Full Of Stars’, followed by mid-90’s #1s from Take That with ‘Back For Good’ and the Spice Girls’ ‘Too Much’.
